Funds provide aid to over 1000 flood victims in Kampung Gurama and Kampung Kuridak in Beaufort
Kuala Lumpur, 27 January 2022 - Alliance Bank Malaysia Berhad (“Alliance Bank” or the “Bank”) successfully raised over RM55,000 via SocioBiz, its Shariah-compliant crowdfunding platform, to purchase safety and relief equipment for over 1000 victims affected by the floods in Kampung Gurama and Kampung Kuridak in Beaufort, Sabah.
The Bank has partnered with Yayasan Pembangunan Ekonomi Islam Malaysia (YaPEIM) to extend the aid, enabling clean water storage and future flood preparation. The funds covered the cost of four water tanks and four rescue boats.
“The heavy floods in Beaufort had severely impacted the villagers’ lives. The high water levels cut off road access to the villages. Invariably, this led to a loss of income as the villagers were unable to commute to work. The situation was further compounded by the lack of clean water for daily use and consumption,” explained En. Rizal II-Ehzan Azim, Chief Executive Officer of Alliance Islamic Bank.
“We hope that the equipment we purchased with the funds will provide basic water facility and safety to those impacted. Beyond this, we also want to help equip the community to face any future flood situation,” added En. Rizal.
The four rescue boats donated to the Beaufort Fire and Rescue Station will help transport flood victims to temporary shelters and deliver necessities. Meanwhile, the four water tanks, with a total capacity of 36,000 gallons, will provide the villagers with clean water supply.
Dato’ Haji Mohd Redza Shah Bin Abdul Wahid, Chairman of YaPEIM said, “At YaPEIM, we hope to be able to uplift and enhance the well-being of the Ummah. We firmly believe in the importance of collaborating with various stakeholders to achieve our shared goals. As such, we are pleased to partner with Alliance Bank for our ‘Flood Aid for Sabah’ project to provide much-needed flood aid to our local communities. We look forward to deepening our collaboration in future projects.”
Most of the villagers in the affected areas are involved in rubber tapping and palm oil business. Floods are common and occur nearly three times a year, affecting their livelihoods.
